New York City

All major network TV stations throughout America, and many worldwide are planning special coverage for September 11th, and many regular programs will be suspended for the day, we advise consulting your cable or station provider for more details. Associated Press will be covering the events in NYC, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania with live coverage cameras on the global video wire.

Plans for the "Big Three" networks are coming together as the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks fast approaches.

NBC is planning to air the "Concert for America" at the Kennedy Center in Washington. First Lady Laura Bush will be at the event, which will actually be taped at the center Sept. 9.
The National Symphony Orchestra will play the concert, which will also feature additional performers. The list of musicians and other celebrities expected at the event is yet to be announced.

ABC, CBS and NBC will all air expanded editions of their morning news shows that morning.
ABC News will stay in continuous coverage through primetime, with breaks for local news. NBC will also show news that afternoon, including a town meeting-format interview featuring Brokaw and rescue workers, survivors and family members.
CBS hasn't set its afternoon plans yet. It has announced, however that it will re-broadcast its "9-11" documentary, which originally aired in March. The documentary featured footage captured by two filmmakers at the site of the World Trade Center disaster.

World leaders will light an eternal flame, the governor will deliver the Gettysburg Address, and former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani will lead a reading of the names of 2,823 victims during a day of "simple and powerful" observances marking the anniversary of the World Trade Center attack.
The daylong series of remembrances Sept. 11 will start early in the morning with bagpipe and drum processions that will begin in each of the city's five boroughs and converge at the World Trade Center site, in honor of the hundreds of rescue workers killed. The processionals will be led by the pipe and drum corps of five governmental agencies that performed heroically on 9/11 and in its aftermath: the Fire Department of New York, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the NYPD and the City Corrections and Sanitation Departments. The processionals will converge at the World Trade Center site just after 8 a.m. The marchers will descend the ramp at which time a memorial service will begin.
At 8:46 a.m., one year to the minute after American Airlines Flight 11 slammed into the north tower of the World Trade Center, the city will observe a moment of silence.
At the anniversary ceremony, Ex. Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who was praised for his courageous leadership after the attack, will begin the reading of the names of those killed. A cross-section of New Yorkers and people from around the world including those who lost family members and co-workers in the attack will follow Giuliani in reading the names.
Gov. George Pataki will read Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, which includes the line: "We cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract."
After the reading of the names is completed, "Taps" will be played. New Jersey Governor James McGreevey will then read an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence.
The ceremony at ground zero will last 102 minutes - the time it took from the moment the first plane hit until the second tower fell, the service is expected to conclude with a moment of silence just before 10:30 a.m. when the second of the twin towers fell.
Houses of worship will be encouraged to toll their bells, and family members of the victims will be invited to descend a ramp seven stories to the footprint of the twin towers. Each family will pick up a rose and place it in a vase for an arrangement that will be preserved for a permanent memorial.
At sunset, world leaders possibly including U.S. President George W. Bush, (The Whitehouse has already confirmed The President will be in New York on Septemer 11th President George Bush is scheduled to visit ground zero later in the day, after stops at the Pentagon and the site in Pennsylvania where the fourth hijacked airliner crashed.) will light an eternal flame at a temporary memorial in Battery Park, a few blocks from ground zero. The observance will be held at the site of The Sphere, the sculpture that once stood in the plaza of the World Trade Center and that is now part of the temporary memorial to the victims of 9/11 in Battery Park. Heads of state from around the world will be invited to join that ceremony and Mayor Bloomberg will read Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Four Freedoms. At candlelight vigils around the city, including Central Park, New Yorkers will be asked to reflect and listen to music from the city's orchestras. There will be 90 minute candlelight gatherings in each of the five boroughs giving us all an opportunity to reflect and be renewed. These events, which will include orchestral and choral performances, Groups performing that evening will include the Bronx arts ensemble in Van Cortland Park, the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra and Brooklyn Youth Chorus in Prospect Park, St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble in Central Park, the Queens Symphony Orchestra at Flushing Meadows Park, and the Staten Island Symphony at Snug Harbor. Jazz at Lincoln Center will also perform at a location still to be determined.

Every New Yorker should feel welcome at one of these gatherings. We (and Mayor Bloomberg) ask people from around the city, the nation and the world, who cannot attend, to light candles and join their families and neighbors on street corners or in front of their homes.

More than a dozen Broadway theaters will go dark that day, Bond brokerage Cantor Fitzgerald, which lost 658 employees, plans a private remembrance in Central Park. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which lost 75 employees, plans an afternoon memorial.

St. Paul's Chapel, part of New York's Trinity Parish, is a few blocks from the ground zero site. It miraculously survived the collapse of the towers, and served as a place of refuge for the rescue workers. Trinity is arranging a series of church services and events around the theme, "A Day of Hope and Healing."

The chapel will be open to visitors all day and premiere an exhibition highlighting its eight-month-long ministry to recovery workers. Trinity will hold a service of morning prayer at 8am and a choral service at 11am with Archbishop of Canterbury George L. Carey and Presiding Bishop Frank T. Griswold. At the service the Lord Mayor of London, Michael Oliver, will present a commemorative church bell as a symbol of sympathy from the City of London to the people of New York. The service will be broadcast live on the BBC.

The Micronesian paradise of Kiribati looks set to receive a much-needed boost to its economy. The Pacific island chain straddles the international date line, and will be the first place at which Americans can mourn the terrible events of September 11th. This will be the second big "pay-day" for Kiribati in as many years. In December 1999, its Caroline Island was invaded by television and press who flocked to be the first to see in the new millennium. On September 11th the remote outpost - now renamed Millennium Island - will host an event greater even than the two thousandth anniversary of Christ's birth. Kiribati's 80,000 population are already tackling the huge logistical problems surrounding the expected influx. "We intend to build 83 luxury hotels, 275 motels and three budget trailer parks across our 20 inhabited islands," said the Minister for International Development.

Events at this year's Toronto Film Festival will be put on hold on 11 September as a mark of respect for the victims of last year's terror attacks on the US. The annual movie event - in its 27th year - will stop its hectic round of screenings and press conferences promoting the best of the world's new cinema for several hours in the morning.

Motorists in Virginia, and perhaps nationwide, soon will begin driving with license plates showing support for the war on terrorism and honoring those who died on Sept. 11.
